ONIONS

The New York Times

Onions are a great addition to many culinary dishes. Not only do onions enhance flavor (due to their natural triggering of the “umami” taste), they are also good for the health.

In terms of general health benefits, onions are known to have rich levels of antioxidants. It is an effective anti-inflammatory, and a good metabolic enhancer.

Particularly for heart health, onions are known to reduce blood cholesterol and risk of unwanted blood clots. They are also reported to be effective in reducing blood pressure, but the studies are not yet conclusive on this particular benefit, unlike in garlic where the studies and trials have produced more consistent results.
