BE WARY OF BLOOD GLUCOSE

Diabetes UK

Blood Glucose is the sugar in your bloodstream. Not all of it actually comes from sugar. Some of that glucose is from the carbohydrates and fats that your body broke down in the digestion process. Typical sources of blood glucose are white rice, white bread, pasta, potatoes, sweet fruits, and even sweet vegetables.

Note that blood glucose is not in itself bad. However, glucose is supposed to be in your muscles, to be used as fuel for muscle function. For the glucose to get into the muscles, your insulin needs to unlock the muscles for the glucose to be absorbed. If there is more glucose than what the muscle needs or what the insulin can unlock, the glucose remains in the blood stream. When there is regularly too much glucose in the blood stream, this is when all sorts of complications begin, including diabetes and hypertension.

To help you monitor and control your blood glucose, it is important to look at the glycemic index (GI) of the food you eat. Choose food and drinks that have lower GI.
