GARLIC

Good Housekeeping

Garlic has been recognized for a long time, in many cultures and societies, as having positive effects on human health. In fact, ancient healers have documented garlic as a potent medicine for heart ailments.

Fast forward to modern day western medicine, and we find that experimental studies, proven with clinical trials, showing that garlic is indeed effective in preventing, and in some cases even treating, cardiovascular diseases. For addressing hypertension (high blood pressure), addressing hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol and triglycerides), preventing or dissolving thrombosis (unwanted blood clotting), and even preventing atherosclerosis (hardening of the blood vessels), garlic turns out to be one of the most effective natural remedies around.

Among the many nutrients in garlic, there are rich amounts of selenium, manganese, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C. Garlic also contains a variety of antioxidants, one of which is called allicin, and which is believed to be the key ingredient behind garlic’s health benefits.

Data indicates that allicin is an effective anti-inflammatory, and that it relaxes the walls of the blood vessels. With inflammation kept in check, and blood vessels being relaxed and flexible, blood pressure will be lower, and the heart will not have to work as hard to keep the blood pumping throughout the body.
