BERRIES ARE “BERRY-GOOD” FOR YOUR HEART

Everyday Health

Just like nuts, there are many kinds of berries, each containing a set of ingredients in different ratios. Berries in general are good for the heart because of two key reasons: they are rich in fiber, and they are rich in phytonutrients (aka phytochemicals).

Cranberries and Strawberries, in particular, are being heralded as effective superfood for controlling blood glucose levels, as evidenced in recent studies. The control of blood glucose is contributory to the control of blood pressure, which are both good for heart health. However, cranberries and strawberries are not the only good berries out there. Raspberries, blueberries, mulberries, blackberries, along with the many berries there are, are also proven to be rich in phytonutrients and fiber.

Berries need not be cooked. In fact, in most cases, they are best eaten raw. It is best to not smother them in sugar, as that would nullify their blood glucose control effects. A time-tested way to eat berries is to add them to your oats. So let’s talk about oats in the next page.
