4. Popping Your Ears

Medical News Today

Being sick or experiencing a change in air pressure, such as what happens when flying on a plane, can make your ears feel clogged. This can be very annoying, if not downright painful. To relieve discomfort caused by clogged ears, you could try popping your ears. There are several ways you could do this. The simplest one is to force a yawn until you feel your ears pop. If this doesn’t work, you could try swallowing, with or without sips of water.

There are also three maneuvers you could try to pop your ears. To use the Valsalva maneuver, first take a deep breath, then close your mouth and nostrils. Gently breathe out through your nose, but be careful as there is a small risk of rupturing your eardrum. When using the Toynbee maneuver, close your mouth, and hold your nose shut. Then, try swallowing, with or without water. Finally, with the Frenzel maneuver, hold your nose shut, then then make a clicking sound using your tongue.
