Much to the joy of drinkers everywhere, studies have revealed that alcohol may have benefits to our health. However, like anything we consume, alcohol can only be beneficial when enjoyed in moderation. Excessive intake of alcohol can cause health problems and affect various parts of our body, including our ears.

Studies have revealed that any damage that too much alcohol may bring on the human brain may result in hearing loss. It can cause the auditory nerve to shrink, limiting the production of sounds. Alcohol may also affect the hair cells in the ear, which send audio electronic pulses to our brain. The damage may become permanent if the hair cells affected by excessive alcohol in your bloodstream are not able to regenerate. Moreover, heavy drinking can damage the vestibular system, which is the non-auditory part of the inner ear that provides our sense of balance. It can also lead to permanent tinnitus, which is a ringing in the ears.

If you are experiencing an earache or ear infection, it would be wise to avoid alcohol until you get it treated, in order to avoid aggravating the problem.
