After drinking coffee, the most common gastrointestinal symptom is heartburn. Coffee causes discomfort for roughly 68 percent of everyday heartburn sufferers, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, GERD, or acid reflux. Although a lot of research has been done on the subject, there is still a lot of misinformation regarding how to avoid coffee-related heartburn. Here’s our opinion on why coffee makes some people uncomfortable and what may be done about it, based on current studies. Coffee’s acidity, which hovers around pH5, is blamed by many consumers. However, research has proven that this is not the case. In one study, researchers neutralized the acidity of coffee and discovered that those who suffer from heartburn still suffered symptoms. The conclusion was that something in the coffee was causing the stomach to produce more acid.

If you are suffering from heartburn after consuming these foods, and you suspect your GERD is flaring up because of your intake, do take care with your diet and make sure you stop triggering your body to reflux!
