Food Poisoning Causes
Food poisoning is also known as bacterial gastroenteritis. This illness is caused by eating food contaminated by one or a combination of different bacteria (as opposed to a virus). Bacteria such as Campylobacter, Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella, and E. coli, are the most common detected bacteria in food poisoning cases, affecting an estimated 48 million people in the U.S. yearly. The bacteria can easily contaminate food through unsanitary food handling and food preparation practices. These unsanitary practices include not properly washing hands before or during the handling of food, or failure to disinfect surfaces prior to their touching the food.
