Stomach Flu And Food Poisoning Prevention And Treatment

Practice Proper Food Handling

Marilyn Denis

A person who is suffering from stomach flu or food poisoning had best not be touching food that is not meant for their own consumption.  Remember that noroviruses, rotaviruses, and generally any virus that causes stomach flu, as well as the bacteria that cause food poisoning, can be found in the fecal matter of infected persons.  If the person touches the fecal matter, like when cleaning up, and then they touch someone else’s food, there is a high chance the virus or bacteria will be transmitted from the hand to the food, especially if the infected person did not wash his or her hands properly.

Using gloves when handling food may be an option for the infected person, and this might provide some protection against transmitting the virus or bacteria.  However, these gloves might have gotten contaminated when it was in the process of being put on the hands.  Therefore, washing hands before handling food is altogether better disease prevention than wearing gloves.  However, the best option is still to not let the infected person handle someone else’s food at all.
