Avoid Foods That May Worsen Symptoms

While a person is suffering stomach flu or food poisoning, remember that their stomach is more sensitive to irritation compared to when they are well.  Some food and beverages that an infected person would normally eat when they are well, can trigger worsening of abdominal signs and symptoms when they are sick.    

The following list is of food and beverages that are best avoided when still suffering from the abdominal signs and symptoms of stomach flu or food poisoning:

1. Fruit juices and drinks that contain large amounts of sugar – it’s the sugar, it can be very irritating to the stomach.

2. Drinks that contain caffeine such as coffee, tea, and cocoa – these can be very acidic and irritating to the stomach.

3. Milk, cream, and dairy products.

4. Fried and oily foods, such as French fries and pastries that contain butter.

5. Ice cream (again, dairy).

6. Processed fruits such as those that are dried, or canned in syrup. These contain lots of sugar which can irritate your gut.

7. Sweetened cereals (sugar alert!).

8. Candies and chocolates (sugar alert!).

9. Spicy food – some people find spices irritating to the stomach even when they are well and normal, much worse when they are sick.
