Stomach Flu Transmission

Quartz

There are times when several people in the same locations, like in an office or in school, would develop stomach flu signs and symptoms at almost the same time, or soon after someone there starts exhibiting these symptoms.  This is not uncommon, nor is it surprising, since viral gastroenteritis (stomach flu) really is a transmissible disease.  It can be spread from person to person quite easily.

A person with a stomach flu virus will be infectious during the onset of the disease (when the signs and symptoms start to exhibit themselves), all the way to a few days after recovery.  This means the signs and symptoms may be gone, but the virus is still present, active, and transmissible.

Stomach flu viruses are easily transmissible in any of the following methods: direct mouth contact, or indirect contact with surfaces contaminated with the virus.  An example of indirect contact would be if your hands were to come in contact with a surface with the virus, and you touch your mouth; or if your mouth touches a surface that has the virus, like food itself, or eating utensils, or drinking cups.  Body excrement like vomitus and stool can also contain the virus, though the likelihood that one would touch these, without washing hands after, is low.
