If you find that other remedies are not working for you, you might decide to resort to over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers. These medicines typically work quickly and effectively. They are usually the first line of treatment for headaches that won’t go away using natural methods. Examples of OTC medication that are commonly used are ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin), acetaminophen (Tylenol), and naproxen (Aleve). If you find yourself using OTC pain relievers more than twice a week, it would be advisable to see your doctor in case you need preventative medication. Using symptomatic medication too often may actually worsen your headache, or result in more frequent episodes.
