7. Over-the-counter laxatives or prescription medicine
A person might consult with a doctor or pharmacist to determine the best laxative for them. Different varieties have different modes of action, but they are all useful for constipation. A doctor may suggest one of the following:
● Bulking agents are fiber-based laxatives that enhance stool water content.
● Stool softeners contain oils that soften feces and help them travel through the digestive tract.
● Stimulant laxatives stimulate the nerves in the gut, causing bowel movements to rise.
● Osmotic laxatives soften feces by drawing water from the surrounding tissues into the digestive tract.
However, most of these laxatives should not be used on a regular basis without first consulting a doctor.
