Also known as vitamin B9, folate or folic acid is naturally found in leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, grains, and beans. Research has shown that there is a link between depression and folate levels. While folate supplements on their own might have no effect, taking them can boost the effectiveness of antidepressant medication. You could increase your folate intake by consuming foods rich in it, or by taking folic acid supplements. Folic acid is also added to some processed foods, such as energy bars, cereals, and breads.
