You might not give much thought to onions, garlic, chives, and leeks, as these are common ingredients used in preparing people food. But any of these in any form — raw, cooked, powdered, dehydrated, etc. — can be dangerous for your pet.

These foods can cause gastroenteritis or inflammation of the GI tract in dogs. It typically begins with irritation of the mouth and nausea, which would cause your dog to drool excessively. This can lead to abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Other symptoms your dog might experience also include weakness and trouble breathing.

In addition, a toxin found in these vegetables can lead to oxidative damage to your dog’s red blood cell membranes, causing them to burst. This can result in anemia.
