Methods To Relieve Sciatica

Age As A Risk Factor For Sciatica

SamWell Institute for Pain Management

Not everyone will experience sciatica. However, there are some factors that increase a person’s risk of developing the condition. Age is the most common risk factor in developing sciatica. As a person ages, there will be changes in their musculoskeletal structure (the muscles and the bones). This includes changes in the spine. Some people develop herniated discs, a condition when one or several discs between vertebrae start to bulge out of alignment. The bulging can sometimes press on the sciatic nerve and cause sciatica. In some cases, a person would develop a bone spur, a growth of bone tissue that branches off and presses onto flesh or, in the case of sciatica, presses onto the sciatic nerve.
