Could It Be Pneumonia? A Dozen Warning Signs!

1. Pain When Inhaling

A normal breath should be easy.  You inhale, then you exhale.  If everything is normal, there would be no pain, nor difficulty.  However, if you inhale and you feel pain in your chest or in your upper back, or in both, this is not normal.  Sometimes a person with pneumonia would try to take a deeper breath in an attempt to clear the pain, only to realize that the deeper the breath, the more intense the pain.

Note that the pain will be difficult to pinpoint to the lungs because it is what is called a “referred pain”, or a pain on one body part to indicate a problem with another body part.  In this case, it’s the chest or upper back telling you there is something wrong with the lungs.  Also note that this symptom is not exclusive to pneumonia.  However, since this is not normal, especially if this symptom occurs along with other symptoms listed in this article, it would be recommended to get checked by a doctor.  A General Practitioner would likely refer you to a Pulmonologist if he or she suspects pneumonia.
