Who Are In The “At Risk” Category?

“At Risk” is a term used to classify people who have a higher chance of getting the illness, or those whose symptoms would be more severe if they were to catch the illness.  For pneumonia, the following people would be considered “At Risk”:

  • Adults 65 years of age or older
  • Children than 2 years of age or younger
  • Persons who have a pre-existing medical condition that lowers their immune system
  • Persons undergoing chemotherapy or taking medications that have an effect of suppressing the immune system
  • Persons with pre-existing lung conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or heart disease (yes, this is related to the lungs)
  • Persons with weakened lungs, like smokers and vapers
