If you take a look in your pantry right now, are you going to find a few packs of chips? Be honest. We’re pretty sure that you have snacked on chips at home in the past week because according to the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association, the average American eats over four pounds of potato chips a year. In 2011 for example, 1.5 billion pounds of potato chips were consumed in America. America’s favorite snack might be doing a number on our health though; not only can they cause weight gain because of the high trans-fat content, but a lot of chips have high sodium levels, which can cause high blood pressure. Some kinds of chips also contain unhealthy preservatives, artificial ingredients, fake flavoring, or even acrylamide which is a known carcinogen found in cigarettes. If you must have chips, try frying up some, fresh on the stove. While it may be more work than busting open a bag on the couch in front of the tv, your health is worth the extra effort!
