Along with water, sleep, and air, food is what keeps humans alive. It is our main source of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, protein, fat, and so on. This is why it is so important to watch what we eat. The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates considered nutrition one of the main tools a doctor can use in treating patients. This can even be seen in the famous Hippocratic Oath, which is one of the oldest binding documents in history still held sacred by doctors today. In 1926, the phrase “Let food be thy medicine” became quite popular, meaning we should eat food that helps us stay healthy and strong. This was all well and good at the turn of the 20th century, however, 100 years later, it is more common for people to eat foods that are harmful, rather than helpful, to their bodies. While we don’t have to stop eating certain types of food altogether, we nevertheless have to exercise caution when consuming these foods if we want to minimize our risk of cancer.

Here are some foods that might be considered as causes for cancer:

1. Processed Meats

Processed meats are delicious; however, they are also at the top of the list of probable cancer-causing foods. The World Health Organization (WHO) puts them in the same category as smoking and asbestos when it comes to cancer risk. While it is not saying that you will most likely get cancer if you eat these meats, the WHO does cite that processed meats have a higher risk level of probable cancer risks. Meats like bacon, sausages, hot dogs, ham and other meats that are treated with nitrates have an increased risk of causing colorectal cancer.
