25. Cysts

Cysts, like blisters, are closed capsule or sac-like formations that are often filled with a liquid, semisolid, or gaseous material. Cysts range in size from microscopic to massive. Internal organs can be displaced by very big cysts. The vast majority of cysts are benign, however some might be malignant or precancerous. A cyst is not a normal component of the tissue in which it is found. It has a unique membrane that separates it from surrounding tissue. The cyst wall is the exterior (capsular) component of a cyst. If the sac is filled with pus, the cyst is infectious and will develop into an abscess. The indications and symptoms will differ greatly based on the type of cyst. In many cases, a person first notices an odd bump, especially if the cyst is just beneath the surface. Many internal cysts, such as those found in the kidneys or liver, do not cause any symptoms. They may go unnoticed until they are detected by an imaging scan, such as an MRI, CT, or ultrasound scan. When a cyst forms on the brain, it can result in headaches and other symptoms. Breast cysts can also be painful.

If you have severe abdominal pain and suspect any of these conditions, make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible.
