Infarction is defined as tissue death (necrosis) caused by insufficient blood flow to the affected area. It can be brought on by arterial obstructions, rupture, mechanical compression, or vasoconstriction. The ensuing lesion is known as an infarct. Infarction happens as a result of chronic ischemia, which is the insufficient delivery of oxygen and nourishment to a tissue area caused by a disturbance in blood supply. The blood vessel supplying the affected area of tissue may be obstructed due to a blockage in the vessel (e.g., an arterial embolism, thrombus, or atherosclerotic plaque), squished by something outside the vessel causing it to constrict (e.g., tumor, volvulus, or hernia), torn by trauma causing a loss of blood pressure downstream of the tear, or vasoconstricted, which is the narrowing of the blood vessel by contraction of the (e.g., cocaine vasoconstriction leading to myocardial infarction).
