14. Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a female-specific condition. It occurs when tissue identical to endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus. The tissue reacts to menstrual cycle hormones in the same way that endometrial tissue does. It swells and bleeds like endometrial tissue, but the waste tissue and blood have nowhere to go. Although the tissue is not malignant, it can cause scarring and adhesions. It can clog the fallopian tubes and cause cysts to grow as a result of trapped blood. Tissue fusion can result in alterations to the reproductive organs. Pain and irregular bleeding are among the symptoms. It may have an impact on a person’s ability to become pregnant. Endometrial tissue can also form in other places, such as the digestive tract, the lungs, and the area around the heart. The body normally excretes this sort of tissue during menstruation, but endometriosis tissue may linger in the body, causing inflammation. Scar tissue can occur as tissue decomposes.
