Those with narcissistic personality disorder consider themselves to be superior to others. Because of this, they only want to associate themselves with other special people who they consider their equals. They feel that only others of high status could understand them. Moreover, association with those they believe are unique or in some way gifted enhances their own self-esteem. They feel that they are too good to have anything to do with those they consider average or ordinary.
