Ways To Treat And Prevent Kidney Stones

6. Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy

Dr. Ahmed Tawfeek

When kidney stones are too large to pass on their own, or if other procedures do not work, percutaneous nephrolithotomy may be done to remove the stones. With this procedure, the stones are removed from the body by inserting a scope through a small incision in the patient’s back. It is usually recommended when the kidney stones have a diameter of more than 2 centimeters (or 0.8 inches), or when they are located in a place where other forms of treatment are not possible. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is the most effective way to get rid of kidney stones. It is also less invasive compared to a full open surgery.
