If you love spicy food, you might find yourself more prone to hiccups. A chemical compound called capsaicin that is found in chili peppers can activate neurons in your diaphragm. This can make your diaphragm contract, thus causing hiccups. Capsaicin can also irritate your diaphragm, which can also result in hiccups. There is also a theory that when you eat spicy foods, your diaphragm contracts rapidly so that it could release pungent air from spices out of your lungs. This in turn might cause hiccups. However, there is still no real proof for this theory.
