8. Confused Mental State, Forgetfulness or Delirium
Another symptom of pneumonia, especially in older patients, is confusion, forgetfulness and even delirium. This is explained as a mental state that causes someone to act disoriented and distracted. Usually, delirium is an effect of the use of alcohol or drugs, dementia, poisoning, metabolic disorders, and many other medical conditions, like dehydration. Since pneumonia can cause patients to become extremely dehydrated, the lack of necessary water, electrolytes, and difficulty breathing and coughing can cause a confused mental state. Because walking pneumonia tends to affect the elderly more than younger patients, if you notice that one of your loved ones has been confused or not themselves lately, make an appointment with their doctor to get them checked for the possibility of pneumonia.
