23 Signs And Symptoms Of Colorectal Cancer

3. Rectal Bleeding

Kenneth Brown, MD

One of the most common signs of colon cancer is the presence of fresh, bright red blood in the stool, which signifies rectal bleeding. While bleeding can be visible most of the time, with red spots in the toilet following bowel movement, it can also be invisible, which is why lab tests are important as they can detect the tiny amounts of blood not seen by the naked eye. The more the blood there is in the stool gives clues as to how far along the disease is. It can also approximate where in the intestinal tract the tumor is located.

People with hemorrhoids also experience bloody stools, however, healthcare professionals will be able to tell what exactly is causing the bleeding, which is why it is always recommended to see an expert as soon as you find evidence of blood in your feces.
