Colorectal cancer metastasis to the brain or spinal cord causes neurological symptoms to surface in patients with advanced stages of the disease. Patients may experience confusion, irritability and sometimes, psychological symptoms such as hallucinations. Close relatives and companions of patients might notice lapses in cognitive function, particularly in performing tasks that would otherwise be easy for a patient to do. Others might even notice a patient not being able to recognize faces, or remember names. While this is a late symptom of the disease, being aware of it can still be of much help, especially in making patients more comfortable during the end stages of the disease.
