Symptoms of Lewy Body Dementia

Lewy body dementia affects chemicals in the brain that can lead to problems with thinking, movement, behavior, and mood.

Studies have shown that Lewy body dementia is the third most common cause of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, accounting for up to ten percent of cases.

It can be difficult to diagnose LBD, as early symptoms are often confused with those found in Alzheimer’s or in psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. It can also occur alone, or along with other brain disorders.

Read on to learn more about the different symptoms of this degenerative brain disease.

Dementia

Alzheimer’s UK

Dementia is a severe loss of the ability to think, which interferes with your capacity to function normally and perform daily activities.  Dementia is a primary symptom in LBD, and usually includes trouble with attention, visual, and spatial abilities. Memory problems may not be present at first but often arise as LBD progresses. Dementia can also mean you will experience changes in mood and behavior, suffer poor judgment, loss of initiative, confusion about the passage of time, dissociation with certain places, and difficulty with language and numbers.
