An excessive production of mucus in the nasal passage or sinuses may cause excess nasal drainage, also known as a runny nose. Its consistency may range from a thin clear fluid to a thick mucus, and may either run out of the nose or down the back of the throat, or even both. A runny nose is also known by two terms: “rhinorrhea”, which is a discharge that is thin and mostly clear, and “rhinitis”, which is the inflammation of nasal tissues that often results in a runny nose. The term “allergic rhinitis”, also known as hay fever, refers specifically to such an inflammation that is caused by allergens in the air, such as dust or smoke. In general, having a runny nose may indicate that you have the flu.
