A genetic condition is an illness caused in part or entirely by a deviation from the usual DNA sequence. A single gene mutation (monogenic disorder), numerous gene mutations (multifactorial inheritance disorder), a combination of gene mutations and environmental factors, or chromosome damage can all cause genetic illnesses (changes in the number or structure of entire chromosomes, the structures that carry genes).

We are learning that practically all diseases have a hereditary component as we unravel the secrets of the human genome (the whole set of human genes). Some disorders, such as sickle cell disease, are caused by mutations that are inherited from one’s parents and present at birth.
