Exercise-induced hematuria can be caused by a variety of factors, ranging from generally benign to potentially dangerous. If the urine clears 72 hours after exercise, there is no need to examine further. However, if blood in the urine persists or does not clear after 72 hours, several causes must be addressed. The breakdown products of red blood cells and muscles can occasionally emerge in urine, making the urine seem considerably darker and perhaps mistaking it for blood. The majority of cases of exercise-induced hematuria are caused by the athlete’s hydration condition, as well as the intensity and duration of the activity. Hematuria is more likely to occur during longer and more intensive incidents. Runners, particularly those who run more than 10,000 meters, are the most susceptible. Hematuria can be caused by a traumatic injury such as a direct strike or a fall.

Remember if you notice any sort of red discoloration in your urine to make an appointment with your healthcare provider as soon as possible!
