The Good Things That Come With Aging

Right at Home

A recent survey of 2,000 adults sheds light on prevailing attitudes toward aging in American society. While 8 in 10 Americans concur that our culture places excessive importance on maintaining a youthful appearance, the study reveals a nuanced perspective on the benefits of getting older.

The findings underscore a pervasive negative bias surrounding aging in today’s world, with 6 in 10 individuals avoiding disclosure of their age due to the fear of being negatively “judged.” Despite this prevailing apprehension, a noteworthy 75% of respondents express a positive outlook on aging, viewing it not as a battle or source of fear, but rather as an opportunity to lead a more fulfilling and emotionally healthy life.

Interestingly, the majority (71%) of participants report experiencing improvements in various aspects of their lives as they age. Confidence, sense of self, and relationships with family members were identified as areas where positive developments were observed by 49%, 45%, and 44% of respondents, respectively.

The survey delves deeper into the sentiments of those beyond their 20s, revealing that a significant portion feels more fulfilled (69%) and satisfied (71%) with their lives in the present. Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Great Lakes Wellness Collagen, the study also highlights a prevailing desire among three-quarters of the respondents to redirect their focus from combating the aging process to spending more time engaging in activities they love.

In essence, the survey not only exposes the prevailing negative bias associated with aging but also emphasizes the positive transformations and opportunities that come with growing older. The data suggests a shift in perspective, encouraging individuals to embrace the aging process as a means to lead more enriching and emotionally satisfying lives.

“While ‘anti-aging’ has become the norm for quite some time, we’re starting to see a shift among Americans who realize aging is living,” said Jim Burkett, president of Great Lakes Wellness.

A significant majority of survey participants, approximately two-thirds, report experiencing a subjective sense of youthfulness, feeling nearly a decade younger than their actual age, on average.

As individuals age, they accrue numerous benefits, with four prominent advantages standing out. Firstly, the ongoing process of self-discovery remains a constant, as individuals continuously learn new things about themselves or the world each year. Secondly, the accumulation of life experiences contributes to personal growth and resilience. Thirdly, the aging process often brings about a deepening of wisdom, enriching individuals with valuable insights. Lastly, increased confidence is identified as a notable benefit of aging.

So, what contributes to a fulfilling and well-lived life in the later years? The consensus among 80% of respondents is that cultivating a positive attitude plays a pivotal role in experiencing graceful aging.

Encouragingly, seven out of ten individuals express a positive embrace of their advancing age, dispelling preconceived notions about the challenges of growing older. These respondents believe that the reality of aging is not as negative as they initially anticipated, highlighting a shift in perception and an appreciation for the positive aspects of the aging process.
