As the name indicates, open surgery cholecystectomy involves opening up the abdomen to remove the gallbladder. The surgeon makes a large incision, around six inches in length, in the upper right side of the abdomen. As with many other traditional open surgeries, it is necessary to then cut through the underlying fat and muscle tissue to get to the organ involved; in this case, the gallbladder.

The procedure must be performed under general anesthesia. As with its laparoscopic counterpart, the surgery is typically done in 1-2 hours. However, you will likely have to remain in the hospital anywhere from 3-6 days after surgery. Since it is much more invasive, recovery time and healing also take considerably longer, post-procedure, usually between four to six weeks.
