8. Interpersonal Therapy

Verywell Mind

Another form of psychotherapy is interpersonal therapy, or IPT. It is a short-term treatment for depression that was originally developed to treat adults. But it has also been found to be effective in treating adolescents, and is a commonly recommended treatment for children with depression. The idea behind IPT is that depression could be treated by improving the patient’s relationships and communication with other people.

The treatment encourages the patient to change the behaviors that might be causing them problems. The therapist helps him or her identify emotions that trouble them, and to express their emotions in a healthy manner. Interpersonal issues are addressed, with an emphasis on how the patient’s relationships affect his or her symptoms.
