Risk Factors of Kidney Infection
Although anyone could develop a kidney infection, some factors increase your likelihood of getting it. For example, a urinary tract infection has a one in 30 chance of developing into a kidney infection. A weakened immune system can also make you more susceptible to getting it.
Women are at a higher risk than men because they have a shorter urethra, making it easier for bacteria to get into the urinary tract. In addition, a woman’s urethra is located closer to the vagina and anus, allowing bacteria to enter the urinary tract more easily. During pregnancy, urinary tract shifts may occur that can also cause bacteria to spread more quickly.
Other factors that may raise your chances of getting a kidney infection include nerve damage to the bladder, urinary retention, urine backup, and a problem with the shape of your urinary tract.
