Tortas

Food & Wine Magazine

Torta is a hefty meat sandwich popular in Mexico’s culinary culture.  Served in a crusty “bolillo” (a bread that looks like a short version of the French Baguette), any traveler can find it practically anywhere in Mexico.

A typical Torta would be filled with meats like ham, chicken, and the local favorite, Milanesa, a well-seasoned breaded, juicy meat cutlet.  Stuffed along with the meats are fresh vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, and another Mexican signature ingredient, avocados.

Different parts of Mexico will have their own variations of the typical Torta.  One notable variation is that which is popular in Guadalajara, the Torta Ahogada.  This tweak starts with a basic torta, which then gets dipped completely in a flavor-rich tomato sauce before getting served to the diner.
