Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the tubes that stem from the windpipe (trachea) and into the lungs. The bronchial tubes carry air from the windpipe into the lungs during inhalation, and from the lungs back to the windpipe during exhalation. The inflammation results in swelling, often rendering the tubes constricted, and making the passage of air more difficult. During bronchitis, the lining of the bronchial tubes will tend to make more mucus, causing a blockage in the air passages, and thereby triggering coughing.

According to statistics there are more than 10 million people in the United States who catch chronic bronchitis (CB) each year. Of these cases, 7 out of 10 are aged over 45 years old. Studies indicate that the number of women affected by bronchitis is double the number of men who get the disease. Despite these statistics, note that bronchitis can affect anyone at any age, and both genders get the disease. Those with weakened immune systems, either due to age or illness, are more prone to catch the disease.

There are 2 types of bronchitis. As for signs and symptoms, there are 11 to watch out for.

The types of bronchitis are Acute and Chronic. Read on for more details.

1. Acute Bronchitis

Acute Bronchitis, also referred to as AB, and also called a chest cold, is when the signs and symptoms of bronchitis manifest in a person for 7 to at most 10 days. The cough may remain beyond the 10 days, often tapering off to just reflex coughing as opposed to being productive with phlegm, but the other signs and symptoms of the illness would be gone.

2. Chronic Bronchitis

Chronic Bronchitis, also referred to as CB, is when the signs and symptoms of bronchitis, same as those in AB, either persist or keep manifesting again and again. This condition would usually affect those who have asthma, emphysema, or other cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, or COPD. Smokers are also prone to suffer from chronic bronchitis.

Symptoms of Bronchitis

Acute bronchitis is usually caused by viruses, usually the same viruses that cause colds and flu (influenza), so the illness will run its course for the lifespan of the virus, even when not treated. If a virus is treated with an antibiotic, that will be pointless since antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses.

Chronic bronchitis is often caused by smoking. Air pollution, dust, or toxic gases can also cause this illness.

Whether the bronchitis is acute or chronic, there are several signs and symptoms that manifest that can be common to both.

1. Runny Nose

""

The Globe & Mail

Acute bronchitis will usually start out as a cough and cold, and especially obvious would be the runny nose. A runny nose is not always caused by acute bronchitis, it can be caused by a number of other triggers, like allergies, a common cold, or sinusitis. It can also be an indicator that the bronchitis is starting. If you notice that you have been having a runny nose for longer than 7 days, and it is accompanied with flu-like symptoms, it would be good to have yourself checked by a doctor for a proper diagnosis, and proper treatment if needed.

2. Sore Throat

""

Healthline

Most people who develop a cold usually start to develop a cough and sore throat as well. This is often because the mucus from the runny nose drips into the throat (first the pharynx and then the larynx), and irritates the throat lining. Also consider that the mucus from the runny nose would contain microbes which can further infect and inflame the throat. Once the throat is infected and inflamed, it becomes sensitive and sore. A sore throat is easily triggered to cough, even when there is no phlegm. However, as a defense mechanism against the inflammation and infection, the throat will also likely produce phlegm, which in itself can block the air passages and also trigger coughing.

A person suffering from bronchitis will often have a cold, sore throat, and cough all together. Sometimes these signs and symptoms would be accompanied with a low-grade fever.

3. Cough

""

Theraflu

In the previous page, it has been mentioned how a cold can develop a cough in a person suffering from bronchitis, and that coughing will often be one of the signs of bronchitis. The ordinary cough starts out as a phlegmatic cough, meaning there is phlegm that triggers the cough, and often phlegm rises to the mouth with almost every cough. In bronchitis, the cough often starts out dry, no phlegm, like a reflexive reaction to the irritation in your throat, rather than because of a blockage of phlegm. However, with every dry cough, the irritation in the throat can worsen. It’s like rubbing your skin raw, the more you do it, the worse it gets. This can then trigger the body to produce phlegm as a protective layer for the throat, as well as to trap microbes that irritate the throat. The process basically starts out as a dry cough, then progresses to phlegmatic cough with clear, then whitish, then yellowish, or brownish, and eventually greenish phlegm. If you are noticing this progression, even in the earlier stages, and especially if the condition (yours or someone else’s) does not seem to be improving, it might be good to get checked by a doctor. If the cause of your cough or bronchitis is bacterial, you will need to be prescribed antibiotics, but only a medical doctor has the duly recognized expertise to prescribe which medications you should take.

4. Mucus

""

Freepik

Typical of inflammation in the respiratory system, bronchitis also triggers an abundance of mucus production in the lungs, throat, and nose. The mucus is actually one of the body’s defense mechanisms during respiratory inflammation. It acts as a protective and moisturizing layer to keep your throat surfaces from drying out, especially because the throat irritation worsens when the throat is dry. The mucus also acts as a trapping mechanism to capture dust, irritants, and microbes that would otherwise spread uncontrollably to a point where it infects and irritates more organs in the respiratory system. The mucus in a cough, the phlegm, will often start out clear, and then progress to whitish or yellowish. If unabated, this could progress to harder clumps that are brownish or greenish in color. If the phlegm goes beyond yellowish, and the phlegm is becoming more clumpy, it might be good to get checked by a doctor.

5. Shortness Of Breath

""

Medical News Today

Runny noses are difficult to breathe through. Frequent coughing due to excessive phlegm is exhausting. Because of these two factors, persons with bronchitis will often be short of breath. This is usually not a cause for concern. However, if the shortness of breath is already at a level that you are having a hard time breathing, as if you cannot get enough air or are gasping for air already, or you are getting lightheaded because of it, it is time to consult with a doctor. For people who have asthma, this shortness of breath has been known to trigger asthma attacks.

6. Fatigue

""

EU-Startups

A person with bronchitis will already be having a hard time breathing through a runny nose, and will also be exhausted from frequent coughing. As mentioned in the previous page, these two factors can cause shortness of breath. Now, add to these the fact that the persistent coughing can often prevent the person from having a decent night’s sleep, and you can imagine how fatigue can eventually set in. Even with a lot of hours sleeping, because the sleep is frequently interrupted by coughing episodes, the quality of sleep is so low, the person still does not get as much rest as he or she needs to beat the infection. What makes it even worse is that the body’s immune system is already working hard to overcome the infection, so that also takes its toll on the body’s energy stores.

7. Low Grade Fever

""

Medical News Today

Most cases of acute bronchitis are caused by a virus. Most viruses also trigger low grade fevers in a person, so bronchitis will sometimes come with low grade fevers. Note that fevers are sometimes present in bronchitis, but not always. By definition, fevers are considered low grade when they range between 37.4°C and 39.4°C (100°F to 103°F). A fever is one of the mechanisms by which the body’s immune system fights off the infection. That being said, a fever is in itself not always a bad thing, but if it gets too high, as in 39.4°C (103°F) and above, then that is dangerous. Watch out for high grade fevers because if the person is not cooled down quickly, the temperature could keep rising to the point that it would start damaging organs. If a fever gets too high, it is best to cool the person immediately. The fastest way to cool a person who is having a high fever is to wet them either by wiping them with a damp or wet cloth, wetting their head, or giving them a bath. A bath is the best option, but it is not always an available option.

If a person with signs or symptoms of bronchitis begins to have high grade fevers, this could be an indicator that the bronchitis has progressed to something else. Pneumonia is a possible progression. At this point, it is best to consult with a doctor.

8. Shivering

""

AccuWeather

Shivering, also referred to as chills, is one of the body’s defense mechanisms during an infection. The rapid muscle contractions raise the body’s temperature. By doing this, the body develops a fever. As has been discussed in the previous page, the body uses a fever to fight off the viruses that cause infection.

A person with bronchitis will sometimes have chills, but not always. These will manifest in episodes that could last for a few minutes, and sometimes be recurring for a few hours. There are times when the chills will be present, but the fever will not manifest.

9. Chest Soreness

""

HealthXchange

Persons with bronchitis will often suffer soreness in their chest. This is usually the result of the swollen and constricted air passages, as well as the frequent coughing. The excessive production of mucus also blocks the air passages from the lungs (which are located in the chest) to the throat. Taking deep breaths can be difficult, sometimes even painful. This soreness can be present in both acute and chronic bronchitis sufferers. However, persons with chronic bronchitis are more prone to suffer this chest soreness due to the prolonged duration in which their signs and symptoms, especially the coughing, persist.

10. Muscle Aches

""

Your.MD

Coughing is physically taxing. It involves a repetitive intense contraction of the muscles in the abdominal core and thorax. A person with bronchitis will likely be coughing repeatedly over the course of a day, for several days. It is quite expected that the abdominal muscles and the chest muscles will start to feel the effects of repeated contractions after several days in the course of a bout of bronchitis. The effects of repeated contractions will sometimes manifest as muscular pain and/ or muscular fatigue, much like what one would feel after an intense core workout (because coughing repeatedly actually is like a core workout).

The longer the coughing persists, the more the muscle pain and muscle fatigue. As the muscles of the core and thorax become taxed, they can eventually recruit the muscles on the back to get involved in the contractions. Eventually, the pain and fatigue can manifest on the back muscles as well.

11. Whistling, Wheezing, And Rattling In The Chest

""

Self

A normal breath, whether inhaling or exhaling, should sound like a soft blowing of wind, which it is. For persons with bronchitis, their breath sometimes comes with sounds like that of a slight whistling, a wheezing, or a soft rattling. If you are the one suffering from bronchitis, it is possible for you to hear these and even feel these, even when others cannot hear these except if they used a stethoscope.

The whistling or wheezing is a result of the constricted passages. The normal passages would let the normal amount of air in a breath pass unimpeded. With the constriction, that means the same amount of air has to pass faster through a smaller opening, and this is how a whistle is produced. If the breathing is labored, the inhaling or exhaling takes more effort, and the resulting sound is that of a wheeze.

The rattling sound is actually because of the clumps of mucus that are stuck in the bronchial tubes, the trachea (windpipe), and the throat. Some of these clumps of mucus actually shake or rattle when air passes around them.

If a person is sick enough to the point that their breath comes with whistling, wheezing, or rattling, this will likely mean they are already having a really hard time breathing.

When To See A Doctor

""

Medical News Today

The signs and symptoms mentioned in the previous pages, whether they occur singularly or in combination, do not automatically mean one has bronchitis. However, the presence of these signs and symptoms, especially if they progressively get worse, could lead to bronchitis (if you don’t have it yet), or worse illnesses like pneumonia or chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD). If you have a runny nose, that would not normally be a cause for much concern, at least not yet. If your runny nose progresses to the dry cough which progresses to the phlegmatic cough, it may be good to check with a doctor.

If your phlegmatic cough persists, disrupts your sleep, drains your energy, produces phlegm that is brownish or greenish in color, or if you have traces of blood in your phlegm, it is important to see the doctor already. It is likely that this illness will not go away unless treated. And without treatment, it could get worse.
