Our personality is what makes us unique individuals, different from other people. It is the way we feel, think, and behave. Our personality is defined by a number of things — inherited characteristics, our environment, and our experiences. When someone’s way of feeling, thinking and behaving are far different from what is expected by one’s culture, and if this causes a problem with the way he or her functions, this person has a personality disorder. It is not simply a single instance or a short-term deviation, but one that lasts over time.

There are different types of personality disorders. These long-term behavior patterns are significantly different from the norm. This deviation typically begins in late adolescence or early adulthood. It causes distress, and if it remains untreated, may last long. These disorders may affect a person’s way of thinking about him or herself and others, his or her way of relating to other people, his or her way of controlling his or her behavior, or his or her way of responding emotionally.

One of these personality disorders is the narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), named after Narcissus, a handsome young man in Greek mythology who fell in love with his own reflection. In a nutshell, this disorder is characterized by a need for admiration while lacking empathy for others.

To learn more about narcissistic personality disorder, read on about some of their defining traits.

1. They have a grandiose sense of superiority.

""

Earth

Grandiosity is one of the hallmarks of narcissistic personality disorder. This isn’t any ordinary instance of vanity, but an unrealistic feeling of superiority. Narcissists truly believe that they are special, unique, and more important than everybody else. They think that they deserve special treatment, and expect such from other people. They regard almost everyone else as their inferior, with only a very few others as special as themselves. These special few are the only ones narcissists feel can understand them.

2. They have an overblown sense of entitlement.

""

Colorado Marriage Retreat

Narcissists regard themselves as special and superior to others. This gives them an overblown sense of entitlement. They believe that they deserve favorable treatment, and that others should comply with their wishes without question. Those with narcissistic personality disorder think that they should always come first, and that should get anything that they want. Because they believe themselves special and unique, narcissists have the unreasonable expectation to be treated as such.

3. They exaggerate their achievements.

""

One Equal World

Because narcissists believe they are better than everyone else, they expect to be recognized as such. Whether or not they have done anything to deserve recognition, they crave to be praised and admired, and to be regarded as superior. They often exaggerate their own achievements, or might even lie about them. They would go on about how great their contributions are. And while they might boast of their own talents, narcissists tend to downplay or even devalue the accomplishments of others, especially if these people have received acknowledgement or praise.

4. They fantasize to support their delusions of grandeur.

""

KUT

Narcissists have an overblown sense of grandiosity that isn’t aligned with reality. Because of this, they tend to live with a distorted view of their personal world. They deceive themselves with fantasies of greatness, power, success, beauty, brilliance, or fame. These delusions make them feel special and in control. They either ignore or rationalize any contradicting facts. Narcissists are likely to react with denial or even rage if anything threatens to ruin their fantasy.

5. They seek adulatory attention.

""

Freepik

People with narcissistic personality disorder display self-centered behavior. They also seek attention from others. However, it is important to note that the attention that narcissists seek is adulatory in nature. They feel the need to receive admiration, praise and recognition from others. This is the difference between people with NPD and those with histrionic personality disorder, who care less what kind of attention they get as long as they are at its center.

6. They need to be recognized as superior.

""

Medium

Seeking attention alone is not necessarily a sign of narcissistic personality disorder. More importantly, those with NPD seek to be recognized as superior even if they have done nothing to distinguish themselves as such. Whether or not they have any real achievements, they want to be known as the best at what they do. Narcissists need others to give them validation that they are better than the rest. They thrive on the excessive admiration bestowed on them by others.

7. They only wish to associate with other special people.

""

Youtube

Those with narcissistic personality disorder consider themselves to be superior to others. Because of this, they only want to associate themselves with other special people who they consider their equals. They feel that only others of high status could understand them. Moreover, association with those they believe are unique or in some way gifted enhances their own self-esteem. They feel that they are too good to have anything to do with those they consider average or ordinary.

8. They lack empathy.

""

Quizony

One of the hallmarks of narcissistic personality disorder is a lack of empathy for other people. However, while it may seem that narcissists are unable to understand the feelings of other people, this might not be entirely accurate. It has been suggested that they are unwilling to empathize with others rather than are unable to. They may have the capacity for empathy, yet remain empathically unresponsive. Narcissists may also use their understanding of other people’s emotional state to manipulate them. Whatever the case, they tend to disregard the feelings of the people around them.

9. They are arrogant.

""

The Business Journal

It should come as no surprise that people with narcissistic personality disorder are arrogant. Their inflated sense of self-importance leads to a haughty behavior or attitude. They come across as conceited and boastful to other people. Others may even find them quite pretentious. While people can be arrogant without being a narcissist, those with NPD not only think extremely highly of themselves, but also tend to intentionally put other people down.

10. They experience narcissistic rage.

""

People with narcissistic personality disorder are prone to what is known as narcissistic rage. It may come on as an angry outburst with screaming and yelling. On the other hand, it may also manifest as a silent and passive-aggressive form of anger. Narcissistic rage is usually triggered by one of three things. First is when a narcissist feels like their self-esteem or self-worth is injured. They may lash out at whoever they feel hurt their self-esteem. Another trigger is when their confidence is challenged, and a weakness of theirs is exposed. Finally, a narcissist may go into a narcissistic rage if their sense of self is questioned, or if someone challenges their capabilities.

11. They want to have the best of everything.

""

Dr. Prem Jagyasi

While a lot of us tend to long for the best in life, people with narcissistic personality disorder insist on having the very best of everything. Their desire for this is over the top, and often unquenchable. Their self of grandiosity and entitlement lead them to believe they deserve only the best of things, such as cars, gadgets, or homes. They feel that what they have should be better than what everyone else has. This can be a very expensive and self-destructive trait, as it could lead to excessive debt.

12. They will do anything to get what they want.

""

California Trust

Because they have a great sense of entitlement, narcissists feel that they deserve to get whatever they want. They will stop at nothing to get it. They wouldn’t even think about the consequences of their actions. If they need to, they would manipulate other people to get their way. Narcissists have no qualms about taking advantage of others in order to move forward in their lives. They show no remorse even if they have to step on others to get there.

13. They want their expectations to be met no matter what.

""

Berrett-Koehler Publishers

Along the same line, people with narcissistic personality disorder expect others to give them what they want. Their sense of entitlement gives them unreasonable expectations of special treatment or favors. They also believe that they deserve to receive an automatic and unquestioned compliance of their expectations. Narcissists expect other people to accommodate their desires. They are not willing to compromise to allow others to get their way.

14. They tend to hold grudges.

""

Nick Wignall

People with covert narcissism tend to hold grudges for a long time. Because they are typically more shy than grandiose narcissists, they may choose to hold their silence when they feel they have been treated unfairly, even if they are actually furious. They end up holding a grudge, waiting for an opportunity to get back at the person. They may also hold grudges against those who get recognition for something they think they themselves deserve. Whatever the cause, these grudges can make a narcissist feel resentment and bitterness. It may lead to a desire for revenge, which they may take in a passive-aggressive way. Some examples of revenge are publicly shaming others, or starting rumors about them.

15. They are prone to envy.

""

Ben Kasnocha

Because narcissists always feel the need to be the best, they tend to become envious of others who they feel are doing better than they are. The success of other people tends to trigger their pathological envy. This is because those achievements remind them of what they themselves lack or are unable to achieve. When other people’s accomplishments start to feel threatening, narcissists will do what they can to downplay them. Sometimes, they would turn things around in their head, and end up believing that others envy them.

16. They have difficulty forming relationships.

""

Encourage

While they can be quite charismatic, narcissists have a difficult time forming relationships. A healthy relationship is based on give and take. Unfortunately, it only works one way for narcissists. They put themselves first, and often use others to fulfill their own needs. They are unable to consider the feelings of others, while at the same time feel superior to them. They also have a tendency to distrust others.

Many narcissists follow a relationship pattern. This includes the idealization phase, the devaluation phase, and the discarding phase. Narcissists can be very charming during the idealization phase. They life out a romantic fantasy based on their idea of a perfect relationship. However, this eventually evolves to the devaluation phase, when they start to point out their partner’s flaws and shortcomings, resorting to criticism that can shatter the other person’s confidence. Then comes the discarding phase, when narcissists lose interest in their partner. However the relationship ends, narcissists feel they come out the winner.

17. They are more prone to stress.

""

John Hopkins Medicine

While people with narcissistic personality disorder may appear to have unlimited self-confidence, they are actually more prone to stress. A study published in 2010 revealed how narcissists become more physically stressed when performing before an audience, compared to less narcissistic people. Another study also showed how narcissists are more sensitive to everyday setbacks. This may be due to their hidden insecurities, making them less able to cope with daily stress. Moreover, since narcissists are dependent on others to boost their self-esteem, they also have a greater tendency to become socially stressed.

18. They are more prone to depression.

""

BitBrain

A research conducted in 2020 has shown that there is an increased risk of depression in people with pathological narcissism. While the exact cause is not yet clear, it may be linked with a difficulty in dealing with emotions. One theory states that because narcissistic people are unable to truly process their feelings about themselves, their negative emotions build up. Their efforts to hide their weaknesses from others also lead to them becoming more aloof and depressed. On the other hand, pathological grandiosity often results in failure in both personal and professional areas. This could lead to a feeling of loneliness, isolation, and a lack of accomplishment, possibly triggering depression.

19. They have trouble regulating their emotions and behavior.

""

Health Essentials

People with narcissistic personality disorder tend to see things in extremes. They are either very good or very bad. There is hardly any middle ground. This is also true of their emotions, which tend to be extreme. They have trouble regulating the way they feel and behave. This is one of the reasons they are prone to rage when they are opposed. Unfortunately, if not restrained, this could lead to destructive or hurtful behavior.

20. They may have feelings of insecurity.

""

Narcissists do have a sense of superiority and entitlement. But many may actually struggle with feelings of insecurity beneath their outward appearance of high self-esteem. This trait is mostly found in those with covert narcissism, also called vulnerable narcissism. Covert narcissism exhibits less of the external signs associated with NPD. While they still qualify based on the criteria to be diagnosed with the disorder, they also display characteristics that aren’t typically linked with it. These may include humility, shyness, and being sensitive to other people’s opinions of them. This great sensitivity to criticism may be a sign of insecurity, and a vulnerable sense of self-esteem.
