Just like the original saying that goes ‘the eyes are the window to the soul,’ a few ophthalmologists also explain that the eyes are also the window to one’s overall health. But they also share that it’s only if you know what you’re looking for of course.

Although some revealing changes in the eyes are easy to spot, such as redness, puffiness and dryness, there are others that needs additional inspection from a medical professional to truly understand what’s going on. Through closer examination, doctors should be able to better understand what could be causing these vision or eye problems in the first place, and what other parts of the body may need a closer look.

One main issue though is that many people usually delay eye and other medical checkups, which causes a postponement in treatment and sometimes, even creates deeper medical issues as a result. This is why it’s important to take note of any changes within your body, including your eyes, to better understand what could be going on.

Here are 15 ways your eyes are warning you about your overall health.

1. Red Eyes

No matter what age you are, you must have experienced red eyes at one point of your life. Red eyes, which is when the white portion of the eye – or the sclera – becomes rather pink or red in color. It can also occur for a number of reasons, including allergies, contact with a toxic material, itching, and tons more. In fact, red eyes tend to happen as a result of many different factors, but one particular condition where red eyes is the number one common symptom is known as conjunctivitis, which is also referred to as “pinkeye.” Conjunctivitis is a condition where the thin layer that lines the sclera, or the conjunctiva, become red and swollen. There is usually discharge or crusting in the mornings, as well as itching, irritation, pain and uncomfortableness. Sometimes, red eyes are also due to bruising that occurs under the eye’s surface. Thankfully, most of these conditions clear up with over-the-counter medications and some time to heal.

2. Dry Eyes

Dry eyes is another common condition that affects many people on a daily basis. Moreover, there are a ton of reasons why people suffer from dry eyes, like getting older, particular medications, allergies, menopause, and more. But there are times when there is more to dry eyes than you’d think. There are times when dry eyes are a result of inflammation caused by certain autoimmune diseases, which tend to be more concerning in nature. These include rosacea, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s Syndrome, and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, which are just a few examples. Although dry eyes are common, it doesn’t automatically mean that they are being caused by an autoimmune disease. Be sure to seek professional medical help to better understand why you have dry eyes in the first place. Treatment could be as simple as an eye drop prescription.

3. Dark Blotches On Your Eye

""
Medical News Today

Another condition of the eye is the appearance of dark blotches on the sclera. This is known as conjunctival nevus, also called an eye freckle. This condition is usually a genetic predisposition, but other times it can be due to sun exposure or particular diseases. Other times, dark blotches may also indicate ocular melanoma, which is a rare kind of cancer that starts in the cells that produce eye pigmentation. If you notice any dark splotches or spots in your eye, especially if they seem to appear suddenly, seek out medical attention immediately to figure out whether it could actually be cancer or something else entirely.

4. White Ring Around Iris

""
Medical News Today

Arcus senilis is a condition when a white, gray or blue ring forms around the iris, or the colored portion of the eye. This is usually a sign of aging often due to cholesterol and not always considered a serious condition. But there are times when it could also be an indication of high triglycerides and cholesterol, especially when it appears in your younger years, around 45 years or so. Although the condition itself doesn’t necessarily need treatment, because it is an indication of high cholesterol, it’s also linked to an increased risk of heart disease, heart attacks and stroke, which is why it shouldn’t be ignored.

5. Blurred Vision

""
Harper’s Point Eye

Blurry eyes can happen for a number of different reasons, with one of the most common being compromised vision. However, there are other times when blurry vision is a symptom of more serious medical issues like glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye syndrome, astigmatism, and macular degeneration. In addition, there are even more critical health issues like migraines, low blood sugar, psoriasis, pre-eclampsia, stroke, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and brain tumors. Of course, it’s also important to note that just because your vision is blurred, it doesn’t immediately mean that you have any of these health conditions. Be sure to talk to a doctor if you are experiencing blurry vision alongside any other worrisome symptoms at the same time to figure out what the actual cause may be.

6. Bulging Eyes

""
Stallard Eye Clinic

Bulging eyes, which is also called exophthalmos, is explained as the eyes sticking out from their sockets or seeing more of the white portion of the eyeball than usual. Some reasons why this happens are bleeding behind the eyes, infection or injury, or possibly, tumors. But one of the most common reasons for bulging eyes is hyperthyroidism, a condition that’s caused by having an overactive thyroid gland that overproduces thyroid hormones. One possible cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves’ Disease, which happens to be an autoimmune disease where the healthy tissue of the thyroid gland is attacked by the immune system. Graves’ also has other symptoms like weight loss, anxiety and a rapid pulse. If you have bulging eyes and any of these other signs, speak with your doctor about what you’re experiencing to get a proper diagnosis in order to start treatment immediately.

7. Floaters

""
Insider

Floaters are tiny specks or dark shapes that seem to move around in your area of vision. They can look like spots, threads, squiggly lines, or even cobwebs at times. In addition, when you attempt to focus on the floater, they usually move, making it almost impossible to see them directly. Although floaters are a common occurrence in people as they age, if someone happens to be nearsighted, have undergone cataract surgery, or happen to be diabetic, floaters may be more common. For the most part, floaters are considered quite typical and aren’t necessarily worrisome. But if they do increase in number or become a hindrance to everyday life, be sure to seek professional medical health as this could be a sign of a retinal tear or even retinal detachment, a condition that requires almost immediate treatment because if it’s left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss or even blindness.

8. Red Dots

""
Book An Eye Test

Unlike red eyes, red dots in the eye are actually spots or dots that are red in color on the sclera. While they may look extremely painful and alarming, it doesn’t necessarily always mean that something is very concerning. These red dots normally indicate that you have a subconjunctival hemorrhage, or that one or more tiny blood vessels popped. This can happen from an eye injury, surgery, coughing, straining, and a number of other conditions that aren’t necessarily worrisome. But there are times when popped blood vessels indicate high blood sugar, which causes the blood vessels to get blocked and swollen, popping as a result. If this is the reason why, then it may possibly lead to impaired vision or even blindness, which is why it’s crucial to seek medical help.

9. White Spots on the Cornea

""
The Eye News

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 45 million people in the United States wear contact lenses. Experts explain that people that use contact lenses often get white dots or spots on the cornea of the eye, which is the clear layer in front of the iris. These white dots or spots can indicate a corneal infection accompanied by pain, swelling and even changes in your vision sometimes. If you ever notice this on your own eye, be sure to seek out medical help to get the necessary treatment because if left without treatment, it can cause scarring, cataracts, astigmatism, and other issues.

10. Mismatched Pupil Sizes

""
Book An Eye Test

The pupils are the black circles in the middle of the eyeball. They are also usually the same size, normally measuring 2 to 4 millimeters in diameter when a bright light is shone in them, and becoming 4 to 8 mm when in the dark. Pupil dilation is something that cannot be controlled, which means they move involuntarily depending on outside stimuli, growing or getting smaller as a result of how much light they allow in. When someone has unequal pupil sizes, the condition is called anisocoria, which isn’t normally worrisome. But there are times when it could also be a sign of something worse like third nerve palsy, a torn or blocked blood vessel or a brain aneurysm, which can be deadly when left untreated.

11. Yellow Eyes

""
Access Eye

When the sclera of your eyes turn yellow or look yellowish in color, it is normally an indication that you have jaundice. Jaundice is a medical condition where the whites of the eyes, the skin, and even one’s mucous membranes become yellow in color because of too much bilirubin in the body. Bilirubin happens to be a yellowish pigment that’s produced due to a breakdown of red blood cells, which is also a sign of a bile duct or liver problem. These include certain autoimmune systems, hepatitis, gallstones, and even tumors at times. If you notice the whites of your eyes, or your skin for that matter, turning yellowish, speak to your doctor immediately about what the actual cause could be so you can begin treatment immediately.

12. Droopy Eyes

""
Ophthalmologists Sydney

Eyes that appear to be droopy in appearance for some could be totally natural. But for others, it could actually mean that you have a serious underlying health issue. Sometimes, droopy eyes are caused by being tired or sleepy, other times, it could be due to ptosis, which is the medical term for droopy eyes. This can be caused by a stroke, neurological disorders, nerve damage, or Myasthenia Gravis, which is an autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness. But one concerning issue of droopy ptosis is a brain tumor, which is why it should never be ignored, especially if your eyes aren’t normally droopy. Although droopy eyes doesn’t automatically mean you have a serious medical condition, you should get them checked out if it’s a new sign or if it happens more often.

13. Recurring Stye

""
CTF

Styes are red, bulging, and usually painful lumps filled with pus that happen to appear on the edge of the eyelids that usually resemble a pimple or a boil. They can also vary in size and can occur one by one, or in multiple numbers. Although most styes go away in a few days with minor home treatments, there are times when they are recurring or just refuse to go away completely. If this is the case, it could be due to a rare form of cancer called sebaceous gland carcinoma. This rare cancer begins in the oil gland of the skin, normally affecting the eyelids as a result. Although getting styes often doesn’t necessarily mean you have a serious condition, it could mean that you lack general hygiene and need to rev up your hygiene practices more to keep your face and eyes cleaner and bacteria-free.

14. Irregularities In the Retina

""
Portugal Resident

As explained earlier, some retina issues or abnormalities occur due to high cholesterol or triglycerides. But there are also times when there are spots or broken blood vessels that are caused by the well-known disease HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus. HIV causes acquired immunodeficiency virus (AIDS), which is a disease that attacks the immune system, which is vital to fighting off sickness and disease. When the immune system is compromised, it makes fighting against minor and major health issues very difficult. To make things worse, HIV may also cause other crucial issues like detached retina, CMV retinitis, and Kaposi sarcoma, which end up showing itself in purple or red lesions on the eyelids. This is why any issues or irregularities in the eye or retina should never be ignored and should be checked by an ophthalmologist immediately.

15. Eye Twitching

""
Amazon

Eye twitching is very common, and most people have experienced it at one point or another. Sometimes it happens due to dry eyes, eye strain or fatigue. But there are also times when eye twitching is a result of stress. Although stress is normal, high levels of stress that occur more often than not can become extremely taxing on the body, causing a number of health problems over time. Eye twitching is one way that stress tends to manifest itself, but thankfully it’s really more irritating than it is serious. Although it normally goes away after some time, there are other times when it lasts for days, or even weeks or months. If you notice that your eye is twitching for a prolonged period of time, get yourself to a doctor to help you find ways to better deal with stress and the eye twitching too.

If you notice anything alarming when it comes to your vision or your eyes, whether it’s listed here or not, be sure to set an appointment with an ophthalmologist to better understand what could be going on. The quicker you find out what could be causing these health issues to occur, the faster you can seek out proper treatment.
