Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health condition characterized by a number of chronic issues, including trouble paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive conduct. Adult ADHD can cause problems such as shaky relationships, poor work or school performance, low self-esteem, and more.

Despite the name, symptoms of adult ADHD begin in childhood and last throughout maturity. ADHD is not often identified or diagnosed until a person is an adult. Adult ADHD symptoms may differ from those seen in children. Hyperactivity in adults may lessen, but impulsivity, restlessness, and difficulties paying focus may persist.

Read on to find out symptoms of Adult-onset ADHD.

1. Impulsiveness

Almost everyone gets ADHD-like symptoms at some point in their lives. If your problems are new or have only happened sporadically in the past, you are unlikely to have ADHD. Only when symptoms are strong enough to cause issues in more than one area of your life is ADHD diagnosed. These bothersome symptoms can be traced all the way back to childhood, like impulsiveness. Because certain ADHD symptoms are similar to those caused by other diseases, such as anxiety or mood disorders, diagnosing ADHD in adults can be difficult. Many adults with ADHD also suffer from another mental health problem, such as sadness or anxiety.

2. Disorganization and problems prioritizing

""
CTF

Everyone can become unorganized at different times or in different conditions. High-stress situations, for example, might lead to disorder. Getting a serious sickness, moving, getting married, having a child, or having financial difficulties are all examples. Disorganization is a natural consequence of such circumstances. Chronic disorganization is a clinical term for those who have trouble organizing time and space in their life. Although everyone has clutter or misplaces goods at some point, the persistently disorganized person with ADHD is unable to store, find, or use the work/life objects they require. People interpret a cluttered desk as an inability to organize. Their recurrent disarray could be a result of visual organization or executive functioning issues.

3. Poor time management skills

""
LifeHacks

Some adults with ADHD may struggle with time perception and reaction time, which means our perceptions of how long something takes may differ from others’. This could explain why some people with ADHD struggle with time management and miss deadlines. It’s not that you’re unmotivated, inept, or uninterested. It’s a natural component of how your illness appears. It’s possible that your perception of time has been hampered. This has been dubbed “time blindness” by experts in the field.

4. Chronic Procrastination

""
Help Guide

Procrastination is the inclination to put off completing a task or making a decision that has a deadline. Everybody procrastinates on occasion. Many of us will put off a chore we don’t want to perform until tomorrow, putting it off until we feel less overwhelmed with all of our other duties or just waiting till we have more energy to tackle the task on a new day.

However, problems can arise if you find yourself repeatedly putting off these duties, never getting around to them “later.” This appears to happen frequently in people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), for a variety of reasons. Inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are all hallmarks of ADHD, a neurodevelopmental disease. 9.4 percent of children have been diagnosed with ADHD, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While the disorder is most commonly identified in children, it can also affect adults. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 4.4 percent of adults suffer from ADHD. Adult ADHD, on the other hand, is frequently misdiagnosed and untreated. People procrastinate for a variety of reasons, including the desire to do something more interesting. Procrastination is frequently influenced by the symptoms of ADHD in people with the disorder.

5. Trouble multitasking

""
Damore Mental Health

It’s true what you’ve heard about multitasking: it’s bad for the brain. Multitasking is the process of quickly moving your attention from one task to another and back. Is it truly hard for you to complete multiple tasks at the same time? Isn’t it true that you can wash dishes and breathe at the same time? Isn’t it true that you may drive and converse with your passenger at the same time? Yes, it is feasible to execute multiple tasks at once. However, those activities are either automatic, such as breathing, or easy on the brain, such as strolling, speaking, or cleaning dishes. Doing more than one item at a time requires task switching since cognitively demanding activities require concentrated attention.

ADHD makes it difficult to organize, start work, manage time, lead our behaviors and responses, make decisions, and control emotions, as you may know. To put it another way, persons with ADHD expend more cognitive energy to go through their daily routines. So you’re out of gas by the end of the day (or even the morning). By switching tasks, you’re wasting more of your limited energy than you can afford.

6. Excessive activity or restlessness

""
Wexner Medical

You may feel as if your internal motor won’t turn off as an adult with ADHD. When you can’t do anything right away, your desire to keep moving and doing things can lead to frustration. Restlessness follows, which can lead to frustration and anxiety. Anxiety is a common symptom of adult ADHD, as the mind tends to replay troubling events over and over again. Fidgeting is a physical indicator of restlessness and anxiety in adults, just like it is in toddlers. Adults with ADHD may move around a lot, tap their hands or feet, shift in their seats, or have trouble sitting still.

7. Poor planning

""
Healthline

Everyone’s life can be difficult at times. However, someone with ADHD may have more difficult life situations than someone without the disorder. This can make it tough for them to keep track of everything. Adults with ADHD may struggle to maintain organizational abilities. This can involve difficulties keeping track of tasks and appropriately prioritizing them. Poor planning may cause havoc in almost every part of your life, resulting in unfulfilled promises and excessive worry. The two sides of the same coin are planning ahead and deferred pleasure. Delay discounting is a phenomenon that affects everyone, and it basically means that benefits become less rewarding as time passes. Some people, however, discount rewards more than others. So, given the option of receiving twenty dollars now versus a hundred dollars a year from now, some people are more inclined to choose the twenty dollars right now. Overall, those with ADHD have more delay discounting and hence pay more attention to short-term incentives, despite the fact that planning for the future necessitates being aware of long-term rewards.

8. Low frustration tolerance

""
QuandadHD

The majority of people with ADHD have a low tolerance for frustration. They can get overly emotional in response to stimuli. They lack a barrier that permits them to push aside unpleasant emotions, and they are frequently overwhelmed by them, making them unbearable. People with ADHD have problems pushing themselves to accomplish tasks that aren’t intrinsically rewarding without some sort of strong positive or negative external reward. Because completing your taxes doesn’t have a lot of positive external reward, persons with ADHD often put it off until the negative incentive for not doing them becomes so great that adrenaline and stress drive the ADHD brain into action. This leads to a desperado approach to time management, in which activities are always put off until the last possible second, and then everything is done at once.

9. Frequent mood swings

""
Help Guide

When compared to the neurotypical way, people with ADHD face judgment regarding their talents for the rest of their lives, which can have a substantial impact on self-image and self-worth. People with ADHD have a hard time understanding social norms and interactions, thus they are socially isolated and, as the adage goes, they are the last to be picked but the first to be picked on. As a result, most persons with ADHD enter adulthood with a deep sense that they are somehow less than everyone else. They are uncool, undesirable, and occasionally severely defective. The term “damaged goods” is frequently used to describe how someone with ADHD feels about themselves in the world.

Because of the humiliation and guilt that results, positive feedback frequently flies right by them. They are completely oblivious to it. They’re considerably more aware of negative feedback they receive. As a result, shame nearly always takes precedence over all other emotions. “Shame is the master feeling,” as Sigmund Freud put it, because it’s the one emotion that doesn’t seek expression and can influence whether other emotions are expressed or even acknowledged and dealt with.

10. Overreaction

""
Add

Overreaction is one of the most common symptoms of ADHD, in which the emotional response does not match the nature or severity of the stimulus. People with ADHD may struggle to discriminate between serious risks and small issues. They frequently overreact and, “need to be talked off the brink.” Because of their hyperarousal, most persons with ADHD never experience tranquility. Their minds are constantly racing at 100 miles per hour till they become fatigued. Rejection and criticism are extremely painful for those with ADHD. They may feel hopeless and demoralized since they strive to succeed by imitating the success paths of people without ADHD, only to fail repeatedly because the same paths do not work for them.

11. Flash Temper

""
Additude Mag

Many people with ADHD are taken aback by their own emotions, especially when they shift quickly and leave no time to ponder, contemplate, or feel. They act on or express emotions in these situations without having the opportunity to filter them. The flash temper is the most common unexpected emotion that gets people with ADHD into trouble. In an instant, you go from zero to FU. Medications can alleviate this symptom, giving persons with ADHD the same two seconds that everyone else has to recognize an emotion and determine, “I really shouldn’t express that.”

12. Hypersensitivity

""
Very Well Mind

Hypersensitivity, commonly referred to as “highly sensitive person” (HSP), is not a mental illness. It’s a characteristic that many people with ADHD share. Hypersensitivity manifests itself as a strong sensitivity to physical and emotional stimuli (through sound, sigh, touch, or smell) as well as a tendency to be easily overwhelmed by too much information. Furthermore, asthma, eczema, and allergies are more common among extremely sensitive people. According to psychologist and psychotherapist Elaine N. Aron, Ph.D., author of The Highly Sensitive Person, “it’s helpful in some contexts and not in others.” She believes that being aware of your hypersensitivity is crucial. Being conscious of it, as with ADHD, allows you to know that you are not alone.

If you find yourself experiencing these things again and again, and you suspect you may have undiagnosed or adult-onset ADHD, see a mental health professional or occupational therapist to help you get a handle on the things that are making your life difficult. It gets better.
