RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a common and highly contagious virus that infects most children’s respiratory tracts before they turn two. The infection produces a cold in the majority of newborns and young children. However, RSV infection can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening complications such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis, an inflammation of the lungs’ tiny airways. If a child is exposed to other people who have the virus, he or she is more likely to contract it. RSV epidemics are common in neighborhoods, classrooms, and childcare institutions every year. RSV is more prevalent throughout the winter and early spring.

RSV can affect anyone of any age, however it is more common in children and the elderly. By the time they are two years old, most babies have been infected at least once. The virus can potentially be reinfected in babies. Infection might strike at any time during one’s life. RSV infection in older children and adults might mimic a severe asthma attack. Premature babies, as well as those with heart, lung, or immune system disorders, are at a higher risk for more serious complications.

Read on to find out the symptoms of RSV, and what to watch out for!

1. Wheezing

Wheezing is a high-pitched whistling sound created during breathing. It’s frequently linked to breathing problems. Wheezing can happen as you breathe out (expiration) or breathe in (inhalation) (inspiration). Wheezing is caused by inflammation and constriction of the airway at any place, from the throat to the lungs. Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which both produce narrowing and spasms (bronchospasms) in the tiny airways of your lungs, are the most prevalent causes of persistent wheezing. Wheezing can be caused by inflammation in the throat or bigger airways. Infection, an allergic reaction, or a physical obstruction, such as a tumor or an inhaled foreign object, are all common reasons.

2. Runny nose

""
Norton Children

Excess nasal discharge causes a runny nose. It could be a clear, thin liquid, thick mucus, or something in between. Drainage might come from your nose, the back of your throat, or both. A runny nose is commonly referred to as “rhinorrhea” or “rhinitis.” Rhinorrhea is a nasal discharge that is thin and mainly clear. The inflammation of nasal tissues is known as rhinitis. A runny nose is a common symptom of rhinitis. You may or may not have nasal congestion if you have a runny nose.

Anything that irritates or inflames the nasal tissues might induce a runny nose. A runny nose can be caused by a variety of things, including infections like the common cold and influenza, allergies, and numerous irritants. Nonallergic rhinitis, also known as vasomotor rhinitis, is a disorder in which some people have a chronically runny nose for no obvious reason. Polyps, a foreign body, RSV, a tumor, or migraine-like symptoms are less common causes of a runny nose.

3. Fever

""
Bundoo

A fever is a spike in body temperature that lasts only a few hours. It’s just one aspect of the immune system’s entire response. An infection is the most common cause of fever. A fever can be unpleasant for most children and adults. However, it is rarely a cause for alarm. However, in infants, even a modest temperature can indicate a dangerous infection. Fevers usually disappear after a few days. A fever can be treated with a variety of over-the-counter drugs. Body temperatures vary slightly amongst people and at different times of the day. The average temperature is generally described as 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 C). A fever is defined as a temperature of 100 F (37.8 C) or greater measured with a mouth thermometer (oral temperature).

The most accurate way to assess core body temperature is with an oral or rectal thermometer. Although practical, ear or forehead thermometers provide less precise temperature readings. Rectal temperature is slightly more precise in babies if achievable. Give your health care provider both the reading and the type of thermometer you used when reporting your temperature.

4. Cough

""
Newsroom

When something irritates your throat or airways, your body responds with a cough. Nerves are stimulated by an irritation, which sends a message to your brain. To force out the irritant, the brain instructs muscles in your chest and abdomen to push air out of your lungs. Coughing on occasion is normal and healthy. A cough that lasts for several weeks or produces yellow or bloody mucus may signal a medical problem that requires treatment. Coughing can be rather powerful at times. Coughing over an extended period of time might irritate the lungs and induce more coughing.

5. Short periods without breathing (apnea)

""
CTF

Sleep apnea is a potentially fatal sleeping disorder in which breathing stops and begins regularly. You may have sleep apnea if you snore loudly and are fatigued even after a full night’s sleep. The three main types of sleep apnea are obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when the muscles in your throat relax, central sleep apnea, which occurs when your brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing, and complex sleep apnea syndrome, also known as treatment-emergent central sleep apnea, which occurs when someone has both obstructive and central sleep apnea.

When the muscles in the back of your throat relax, obstructive sleep apnea occurs. The soft palate, the triangular portion of tissue hanging from the soft palate (uvula), the tonsils, the side walls of the throat, and the tongue are all supported by these muscles. As you breathe in, your airway narrows or closes as your muscles relax. You’re not getting enough air, which causes your blood oxygen level to drop. When your brain detects that you are unable to breathe, it briefly wakes you up so that you can reopen your airway. You normally don’t remember this waking because it is so fleeting. Snorting, choking, or gasping may occur. This rhythm can repeat five to thirty times each hour or more during the night.

6. Trouble eating, drinking, or swallowing

""
UH Hospitals

Dysphagia is a problem with swallowing that makes it difficult to get food or drink from your mouth to your stomach. Dysphagia is a painful condition. Swallowing is sometimes impossible. Having trouble swallowing on occasion, such as when you eat too quickly or don’t chew your food thoroughly, is usually not a cause for concern. Persistent dysphagia, on the other hand, can be a significant medical problem that requires treatment. Swallowing is a complicated process that involves numerous muscles and nerves. Dysphagia can be caused by any disorder that weakens or destroys the muscles and nerves involved in swallowing, or causes a constriction of the back of the throat or esophagus.

7. Flaring of the nostrils or straining of the chest or stomach while breathing

""
Meredith Corp

When the nostrils spread during breathing, this is known as nasal flare. It is frequently an indicator of respiratory difficulties. Nasal flaring is more common in babies and little children. Nasal flaring can be caused by any illness that causes difficulty breathing. Many causes of nasal flaring are harmless, while others can be deadly. Nasal flaring in early newborns might indicate respiratory discomfort. This is a dangerous lung ailment in which not enough oxygen reaches the lungs and bloodstream. Nasal flaring can be caused by a variety of factors, from short-term diseases to long-term illnesses and accidents. It could also be a reaction to strenuous exercise. Nasal flare should not be present in someone who is breathing smoothly. Another typical cause of nasal flaring is croup. Croup is an infection that causes inflammation of the larynx and trachea in children.

8. Breathing faster than usual, or trouble breathing

""
Very Well Health

Symptoms of respiratory distress are those that are caused by breathing difficulties. Respiratory discomfort in children can be caused by a variety of factors. Infections, persistent sickness, or a closed airway are the most common causes. A youngster who was born prematurely or who has been admitted to the hospital for respiratory difficulties may be more vulnerable. When your child has to work hard to breathe, it could indicate that he or she is not getting enough oxygen to the lungs or that an illness is developing.

9. Turning blue around the lips and fingertips

""
Medical News Today

The disorder blue baby syndrome, commonly known as infant methemoglobinemia, causes a baby’s skin to turn blue. This happens because the baby’s blood contains less hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a blood protein that transports oxygen throughout the body and distributes it to various cells and tissues. The baby turns blue when the blood cannot deliver oxygen around the body (cyanotic). Blue infant syndrome is uncommon in developed countries, but it does occur in rural regions on occasion. Babies born in poorer nations with limited access to clean water are still at risk. If your child is experiencing any symptoms that indicate difficulty breathing, make sure to contact your healthcare provider immediately!
