Along with water, sleep, and air, food is what keeps humans alive. It is our main source of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, protein, fat, and so on. This is why it is so important to watch what we eat. The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates considered nutrition one of the main tools a doctor can use in treating patients. This can even be seen in the famous Hippocratic Oath, which is one of the oldest binding documents in history still held sacred by doctors today. In 1926, the phrase “Let food be thy medicine” became quite popular, meaning we should eat food that helps us stay healthy and strong. This was all well and good at the turn of the 20th century, however, 100 years later, it is more common for people to eat foods that are harmful, rather than helpful, to their bodies. While we don’t have to stop eating certain types of food altogether, we nevertheless have to exercise caution when consuming these foods if we want to minimize our risk of cancer.

Here are some foods that might be considered as causes for cancer:

1. Processed Meats

Processed meats are delicious; however, they are also at the top of the list of probable cancer-causing foods. The World Health Organization (WHO) puts them in the same category as smoking and asbestos when it comes to cancer risk. While it is not saying that you will most likely get cancer if you eat these meats, the WHO does cite that processed meats have a higher risk level of probable cancer risks. Meats like bacon, sausages, hot dogs, ham and other meats that are treated with nitrates have an increased risk of causing colorectal cancer.

2. Charred Meat

""
Twitter

If we’ve learned anything from all the cooking shows on TV, we know that brown food is good food. That means that getting a little bit of a char on your meat will enhance the flavor — whether you are barbecuing or skillet-frying your food. However, studies have shown that the high temperatures needed to char food can produce cancer-causing heterocyclic aromatic amines, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. What does this mean? It means that the carbonized charred portions of the meat may put you at risk for cancer. Do you have to stop barbecuing your food? Not necessarily — but you do need to take care not to overcook your food and to make sure that you use healthy cooking methods like steaming and boiling often, as well.

3. Red Meat

""
William Reed

While a New York Steak or a choice Porterhouse once in a while will not necessarily throw your health out of whack, consuming too much red meat can be seriously dangerous. Studies have shown that people who eat red meat every day are at a greater risk for developing certain cancers. In some cases, the risk is increased by about 20% — especially colon cancer. Try limiting red meat consumption and bulk up on fruits and vegetables to provide nutrients and vitamins too. Save the steaks for special occasions!

4. Farmed Salmon

""
North Coast Seafoods

Salmon is a staple for many people, but in the US up to 60% of the salmon available on the market is farmed rather than fished. This means that the fish are fed unnatural diets that have chemicals, antibiotics, pesticides, and other known carcinogens that are also found in asbestos. On average, farmed salmon has sixteen times more toxins than those found in wild salmon. If you’re making the decision to eat healthily, make sure the food you choose is healthy as well. Ask your grocer if the fish you’re buying is farmed or fresh-caught before you buy. You can also tell if the color is exceptionally bright orange, as most farmed salmon is grey and has color added to it. Wild salmon is a deeper almost burnt sienna color and has smaller fat marbling in comparison.

5. Canned Goods

""
Rolling Stone

While you may think that you’re making the right choice for your health by opting for canned tuna over some processed food, you do need to be careful about those cans. Many of them are lined with bisphenol, a preservative that has been shown to be carcinogenic in animals. Bisphenol (BPA) is linked to breast and prostate cancer, so if you have those in your family, eating canned foods might increase your risk of developing these cancers. While fresh food is always preferable, sometimes our budgets and time just can’t accommodate. Fret not, however, as there are now BPA-free cans on the market. Make sure to ask your grocer about the healthier options for canned food.

6. Chips

""
Wikimedia

If you take a look in your pantry right now, are you going to find a few packs of chips? Be honest. We’re pretty sure that you have snacked on chips at home in the past week because according to the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association, the average American eats over four pounds of potato chips a year. In 2011 for example, 1.5 billion pounds of potato chips were consumed in America. America’s favorite snack might be doing a number on our health though; not only can they cause weight gain because of the high trans-fat content, but a lot of chips have high sodium levels, which can cause high blood pressure. Some kinds of chips also contain unhealthy preservatives, artificial ingredients, fake flavoring, or even acrylamide which is a known carcinogen found in cigarettes. If you must have chips, try frying up some, fresh on the stove. While it may be more work than busting open a bag on the couch in front of the tv, your health is worth the extra effort!

7. Microwavable Popcorn

""
Wikimedia

In recent years, the news has been peppered with articles and stories about how dangerous microwave popcorn can be. According to the FDA, microwave popcorn might contain carcinogens, which are cancer-causing compounds. Some scientists believe that there is a possible link between microwave popcorn and cancer from chemicals called perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) which line the bags. PFCs resist grease and make them ideal for stopping the oil from seeping through the paper bags. If you absolutely are craving for microwave popcorn, try cutting open the bag, putting the contents (which will be a big gloopy rectangle with unpopped kernels suspended in what we can only assume is butter) in a large pot over medium heat. Break the rectangle apart with a wooden spoon as the pot heats up and the butter starts to melt, and make sure you stir the kernels, so they don’t burn. At some point, you may want to don protective eyewear so that when the first kernels start popping you don’t get an eyeful of hot grease! When the first few kernels have popped, cover the pot and shake it around a bit on the burner. Stop shaking from time to time to listen for pops. When you don’t hear anything for 20 seconds, remove the popcorn from the heat and transfer to a bowl.

8. Bagels

""
Healthline

An Everything Bagel with schmear is something that everyone should try at least once in their life. However, having it on the regular can be seriously bad for your health. Just like white bread, bagels have a high glycemic index which may be linked to increased risk for lung cancer. Similarly, corn flakes and puffed rice are similarly bad for you on the glycemic index scale and might also increase your risk for lung cancer. Bin the bagels for the meantime and go for something healthy like steel cut oats or whole wheat.

9. White Flour

""
William Reed

While most of us are aware that white bread is not the healthiest choice we can make when it comes to the kind of carbohydrates we incorporate into our diets, few of us are aware that processed white flour can actually be dangerous for your health. As we know, refining grains strips them of their natural vitamins and nutrients. Some mills are no longer happy with waiting for flour to whiten with time — as that is no longer economically viable in this economy. Sometimes, white flour is bleached with a chemical called chlorine gas. In large quantities, chlorine gas is a dangerous irritant that is unsafe to inhale or to be around unprotected. White processed flour also has a very high glycemic rate, which raises the risk of cancer. Avoiding refined grains can help minimize the risk of tumors, which have been found to feed mostly on the sugars in your bloodstream.

10. Refined Sugars

""
Chris Kresser

Seeing as how tumors feed on sugars and that sugar helps them increase in size, we can safely say that refined sugars are not the best thing to be putting into our bodies. Refined sugars, like white sugar or washed sugar or hard candy can increase the possibility of cancer cells, as well as spike your insulin levels. Cancer cells thrive on fructose-rich sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup, which metabolizes cancer cells more rapidly than other sweeteners. Sweets and snacks like cakes, pies, cookies, juices, sodas, and sauces are loaded with refined sugar and you’d do well to limit your intake of these foods.

11. Hydrogenated Oils

""
William Reed

You’d think that vegetable oils would be good for you, but sometimes nature throws you curve balls. All hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils. They are not extracted naturally like butter, olive oil, or coconut oil — they need to be chemically removed from the source. Hydrogenated oils are made more appealing to customers and are usually deodorized and colorized to look tastier. They are used to preserve processed foods, more often than not. Another reason to avoid that ham. These oils contain high levels of fatty acids that may cause heart disease and increase the risk of skin cancer.

12. Dairy

""
Biz

While we all need calcium for healthy bones, experts have found a link between excessive calcium intake and prostate cancer. This might be because calcium-rich dairy can lower your body’s supply of dihydroxyvitamin D3, which is a very important hormone known to actively protect men against cancerous cells in the prostate gland. Studies have shown that men with a higher consumption rate of dairy were more likely to develop prostate cancer versus those who limited their consumption. What does this mean for your diet? Just try not to overindulge on milk, cheese, eggs, and other dairy products. Have a glass of milk a day, but maybe skip that six-egg omelet.

13. Saturated Fat

""
William Reed

Saturated may not be the reason behind heart disease, it is still a dangerous thing to consume too much of. Several studies have revealed that postmenopausal women with the highest saturated fat intake actually increased their risk of breast cancer by over 30%, compared to women who did not consume as much saturated fat. The older we get, the more we should minimize the consumption of saturated fats that are found in fatty meats, processed cheeses, vegetable oils, and butter-based dishes.

14. Artificial Sweeteners

""
Harvard Health

Artificial sweeteners function sort of like a honey trap. We are lured in by the tantalizing sweetness of the benefits of reduced sugar, yet we can find ourselves in the mire of too much of a good thing. Artificial sweeteners are adopted by those who want to try to lose weight, people who have diabetes and need to avoid sugar, or those who are just trying to improve their diet. However, some studies suggest that that those who consume artificial sweeteners on a regular basis actually gain rather than lose weight, especially if we consume coffee sweeteners and soda. Furthermore, artificial sweeteners make it difficult to control blood sugar levels, and other such conditions. There is also evidence that the chemicals in artificial sweeteners can break down into a deadly toxin known as “DKP”. When your stomach processes this toxin, it in turn can produce chemicals that are carcinogenic and result in things like brain tumors.

15. Non-Organic Fruits

""
Mirror

This one is a doozy. For the most part, fruits are the healthiest things you can consume apart from vegetables and water. Non-organic fruits however are strange ducks; while they are naturally good for you (non-organic bananas still have potassium, non-organic grapes still have beta-carotene, etc.), they come with a gaggle of toxins from dangerous pesticides such as atrazine, thiodicarb, organophosphates, as well as high-nitrogen fertilizers. Non-organic fruits will contain their natural vitamins, but these toxins can cause damage to humans, especially in our reproductive systems. Furthermore, a lot of farm fields use sewage from major cities as a form of fertilizer. Organic farms will never do this, so you’re better off going that route. As the Invisible Gardener Andy said in 1972, “Don’t panic, it’s organic!”

16. Highly Salted, Pickled, or Seasoned Foods

""
Wikimedia

Food that is cured using nitrites or nitrates are tasty, there is no doubt about that. Bacon, for example, immediately comes to mind. These nitrates or nitrites act as preservatives and add color to meats, making them slightly pink or red as they cure the flesh. Although these preservatives don’t directly cause cancer, they can change under certain conditions and become N-nitroso composites. These composites are associated with greater cancer risks in the long run. Smoking foods used to be a practical way for people to preserve meat, however it does cause the food items to absorb considerable amounts of tar from the smoke. Tar, as we all know, is a recognizable carcinogen. Meats such as bacon, sausage, and other processed meats are very high in salt and fat, and pickles are high in salt content as well. Studies suggest that these foods greatly increase the risks of colorectal and stomach cancer — perhaps because they are naturally corrosive substances and perhaps break down the soft organic tissue over time with a lot of exposure. Do yourself a favor and limit these foods in your diet.

17. Alcohol

""
Canada Food Guide

While alcohol may not necessarily be considered a food by a lot of people, like your doctor, it still deserves mention on this list because of the havoc it can wreak on your body. Alcohol is the second leading cause of cancer, after tobacco. While a low consumption of alcohol may be deemed healthy, studies have shown that one drink a day caused a 30% increase in the risk of breast cancer (in a study of over 200,00 women over 14 years), versus those who did not drink. One drink a day is considered a low to moderate rate of consumption — so you can only imagine what the risk would be for habitually heavy drinkers or binge drinkers. We also know that excessive consumption of alcohol can cause heart failure, stroke, sudden death, as well as a whole gamut of liver and blood issues. However, it bears to be noted that not all heavy drinkers get ailments or develop cancer. The risk of you doing so is increased, compared to if you did not consume any alcohol at all.

18. Frankenfoods

""
CBS

We’ve heard the term “Frankenfoods” bandied about in the past two decades or so, and it is usually connoting genetically modified organisms, or GMOs — with the portmanteau name derived from an iconic monster who just wanted a friend. However, we need to remember that anything artificial is not really food, and that includes diet foods and diet drinks. They may have abnormally high levels of aspartame, refined sugar, high sodium levels, or even food coloring to appear more appetizing. Low fat and low calories do not automatically make food healthy. Look for fresh foods and whole ingredients so that you can really appreciate what you are putting into your body and minimize the risks of getting sick.
