Unlike chronological age, which reflects the number of years you’ve lived, biological age measures how well your body is performing. Healthy lifestyle choices have long been associated with the potential to help people feel and function as if they are younger. According to Lucia Aronica, PhD, co-lead author of the study and a researcher at Stanford University, slowing biological age can have substantial benefits.
“While medical advances over the past century have significantly prolonged life expectancy, a substantial portion of the population still spends about one-third of their lives dealing with at least one age-related condition like heart disease or diabetes,” says Dr. Aronica. “Essentially, if we can slow our biological aging, we might reduce the risk of developing age-related diseases and live healthier longer, not merely extend the quantity of years we live.”
Understanding Biological Age
One of the primary ways to assess biological age is through a process called DNA methylation. This process involves molecular changes that regulate how certain genes are turned on or off. As we age, changes in DNA methylation can speed up the aging process, while others can slow it down. The recent study aimed to uncover whether switching to a vegan diet could influence these molecular markers.
Researchers examined 21 pairs of adult twins, assigning one twin in each pair to follow a vegan diet for eight weeks while the other twin maintained an omnivorous, but healthy, diet. A vegan diet excludes all forms of animal products, including meat, dairy, eggs, and honey. The researchers focused on how this shift affected DNA methylation and other markers of biological age.
How a Vegan Diet Lowers Body’s Biological Age Markers
The results were striking. Twins who switched to a vegan diet showed significant reductions in markers of biological age, as determined by DNA methylation changes. These biological age markers, which remained constant in their omnivorous siblings, reflected improvements in several key systems, including heart health, hormonal balance, liver function, inflammation, and metabolism.
However, the researchers acknowledge that the exact cause of these benefits is not entirely clear. “It’s hard to say whether the changes observed in the study were directly caused by the vegan diet itself or by related factors, such as consuming fewer calories or losing weight,” notes Varun Dwaraka, co-lead author of the study. Dwaraka, who conducted the research while at Stanford University, also cautions against making broad conclusions from this small study.
“We cannot predict the long-term effects of a vegan diet,” Dwaraka says. “Our study observed changes linked to the diet, but we could not pinpoint which specific aspects — such as eating more vegetables, eating less meat, or naturally consuming fewer calories — were driving these changes. Although we cannot provide specific guidelines based on this brief study, generally incorporating one or more of these aspects into your diet is likely to be beneficial.”
How a Vegan Diet May be Good for Biological Age
The study’s findings support the idea that diet is one of the most modifiable factors influencing biological age. Experts like Douglas Vaughan, MD, director of the Potocsnak Longevity Institute at Northwestern University, emphasize the role of plant-based diets in promoting healthy aging.
“Plant-rich diets are high in anti-inflammatory compounds, which may help slow the pace of biological aging,” says Dr. Vaughan, who was not involved in the study. “Vegan diets are generally high in nutrients that support healthy DNA methylation, including antioxidants.”
Although the exact mechanisms by which a vegan diet might slow biological aging remain unclear, nutrition experts agree on its potential benefits. Kayli Anderson, RDN, founder of Plant-Based Mavens and a faculty member at the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, points to several possible reasons a vegan diet may help. “A plant-based diet may slow biological aging because of high intake of fiber and fruits and vegetables, or its ability to reduce inflammation,” she explains. “Or the aging benefits may be due to the absence of things like animal fats or red meat.”
Long-Term Considerations
Even though the study shows promising results for reducing biological age through a vegan diet, it’s important to focus on what’s sustainable in the long run. Anderson emphasizes that a strict vegan diet may not be necessary for everyone, and individuals can benefit by simply incorporating more plant-based foods into their meals.
“It’s our eating habits over time that help shape our health,” Anderson says. “Simply increasing the amount of plant-based foods you eat is good for your health, whether you’re vegan or not.”
The study provides early evidence that a vegan diet may influence biological age, but more research is needed to understand the full impact.
