Having problems with memory? If you are an elderly person, it is normal to have failing memory, though it depends on the gravity of the memory loss. Sometimes our brain also blocks some memories, most likely traumatic or embarrassing moments in our lives. Of course drugs and alcohol abuse also contributes to memory loss. Well, for those healthy people who want to improve their memory, there is a “new kid in town.”
Black seeds, or black cumin, can sharpen the mind and improve memory, according to a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. After taking 2 500mg capsules of pure black seed powder for 9 weeks each night, 20 healthy men in their 50s tested significantly better on measures of memory, cognition, and attention, compared to 20 placebo-popping counterparts.
The brain-boosting effects of black cumin are likely attributed to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuron protecting properties. This is according to study author Muhammad Shahdaat Bin Sayeed, a lecturer in the department of pharmacy at the University of Asia Pacific in Bangladesh.
Medical herbalist Kevin Spelman, PhD, says the black seeds prevent the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, a proven pharmaceutical method of improving memory. They are rich in essential oils which have been linked to brain-stimulating benefits. Bin Sayeed explains further, “When neurotransmitters responsible for memory retention degrade, normal memory is compromised. This compound can stop that.”
The study also showed that heart, kidney, and liver functions were not affected by the black seed study, and is considered safe for humans. Black seeds have also been used to treat digestive tract conditions like gas, constipation, colic, diarrhea, dysentery, and hemorrhoids. It can also address respiratory conditions like coughs, allergies, bronchitis, asthma, flu, and congestion. Truly seems like a miracle cure.
The black seeds have not yet hit the market in capsule form. The seeds are usually toasted, then ground or used whole to add flavor to bread or curry dishes in the Middle East. Bin Sayeed also explains that they are also paired with honey and water, to blunt the bitterness. Usually about 2 teaspoons is the daily intake amount, but always consult your doctor first. Apparently, it can also cause stomach upset and vomiting in some individuals. So for some, it may not be the wonder cure it is for most people.
Black seeds have been used to make medicines for over 2000 years. It has been recorded in history to cure many ailments and health issues. There are so many names for black seeds all over the world, which include Black Caraway, Kalajaji, Ajenuz, Baraka, Fennel Flower, Roman-Coriander, Charnuska, and more. It is considered safe, but there are rare and extreme cases of side-effects, so always consult a doctor to make sure you are okay to take them. And always do your research, especially when it comes to your health and welfare. You never are sure on how certain meds or cures may affect you. Take care always, hopefully black seeds can at least help boost your memory.
