Nine-year-old Fudia’s life changed dramatically after receiving life-altering surgery aboard Mercy Ships, a floating hospital charity.
Born in Sierra Leone with a debilitating condition that twisted her legs inward at a severe 90-degree angle, Fudia faced constant physical pain and emotional distress.

Fudia’s condition, later diagnosed as Blount’s disease, caused her legs to bow progressively and made walking a painful challenge. Her uncle, Joseph, recalls the moment her condition became apparent:
“We noticed it on the very first day she was born; her legs were not normal,” he shared.
As she grew older, the challenges multiplied. Local hospitals in Sierra Leone lacked the resources or expertise to treat her, leaving her family searching desperately for a solution. Meanwhile, Fudia faced ridicule and exclusion.
“She got rejected in school by her friends and colleagues. Even after changing schools because of that, she was still suffering mockery from people,” Joseph said.
Despite these setbacks, hope arrived in the form of Mercy Ships, an international charity providing free medical care to underserved communities through a state-of-the-art hospital ship.
The Long Wait for Hope
Joseph, determined to find help for his niece, relocated to Freetown with Fudia to wait for the Mercy Ships vessel to return to Sierra Leone. For six years, they held on to the promise of better days. Finally, in 2023, their patience paid off.
Mercy Ships’ medical team welcomed Fudia aboard the ship, where British volunteer surgeon Dr. Rachel Buckingham performed a four-hour surgery to correct her severe leg deformity.
“I will never forget the first time I met Fudia,” said Dr. Buckingham. “Every step was an agonizing effort. Her legs were so severely twisted that walking was a daily battle.”
Dr. Buckingham’s expertise and the specialized care aboard Mercy Ships ensured the success of a complex surgery that many local hospitals were unable to provide.

“She held on to hope despite the suffering she’s endured—like being turned away from hospitals that couldn’t help her,” said Dr. Buckingham.
“I’m so thankful we were able to provide the right surgery, and she can now walk, run, and play happily,” Dr. Buckingham added.
Joseph expressed his profound gratitude, describing his joy upon hearing about the surgery’s success: “When she was selected for surgery, I was very happy, and when I heard that her surgery was successful, I was overjoyed for all that has happened for Fudia.”

Today, Fudia stands five-and-a-half inches taller and walks with newfound confidence. Her transformation extends beyond her physical health. The little girl who once endured taunts and isolation now loves attending school, playing with friends, and dreaming big.
“She was ashamed to go to school,” said her aunt Massa. “But now, no more shame.”
Inspired by the care she received, Fudia now aspires to become a doctor herself. She hopes to help others in the way Mercy Ships helped her, a testament to the ripple effect of kindness and medical intervention.
