Following their in vitro experiments, the researchers moved on to animal studies, where they observed an 84% reduction in tumor cell proliferation in mice treated with Manuka honey.
The study concluded that natural compounds like Manuka honey, which display significant anti-tumor activity and target specific types of cancer cells, could potentially be developed as supplements or alternatives to traditional cancer treatments.
As the researchers stated, “These findings indicate that natural compounds such as Manuka honey, with significant antitumor activity and selectivity towards hormone receptor-positive breast cancers, may be further developed as a supplement or potential alternative to cytotoxic anticancer drugs that have more non-selective adverse effects.”
The Science Behind Authentic Manuka Honey
Not all Manuka honey is created equal, and ensuring the authenticity of this prized substance is crucial. Manuka honey from New Zealand must pass a stringent five-stage testing process known as the Mānuka Honey Science Definition test.
This test was developed by New Zealand’s Ministry of Primary Industries and ensures that all exported honey meets specific chemical and physical standards. Among the key markers tested are naturally occurring compounds like methylglyoxal, dihydroxyacetone, and leptosperin, as well as traces of Manuka plant DNA. Without these markers, it is illegal to label a product as Manuka honey.
In addition to New Zealand’s certification process, organizations such as the Australian Manuka Honey Association (AMHA) and the New Zealand Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA) work to ensure that consumers are buying authentic Manuka honey.
These organizations provide certification marks that indicate the honey meets stringent standards. This is vital, as counterfeit Manuka honey is a significant issue, with estimates suggesting that there is six times more fake Manuka honey on the market than the genuine product.
