A Life-Changing Journey: Triumph Over a Jaw Tumor

When Alex first noticed a swelling on his jaw as a teenager, he had no idea it would grow into an overwhelming burden. What began as a small, non-cancerous tumor slowly expanded over the years, becoming a life-altering condition. By the time Alex reached the age of 23, the benign mass had reached the size of a tennis ball, severely impairing his ability to speak, eat, and swallow. The tumor posed an even graver threat—it could eventually block his airway, making it impossible to breathe.

Living in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Alex faced limited access to specialized medical care. Local hospitals lacked the resources and expertise to handle his condition, and medications and herbal treatments proved ineffective. As his tumor grew, so did his physical and emotional suffering. Chronic infections, tooth loss, and the inability to eat properly were constant struggles, but the most devastating consequence was the social isolation he endured.

“I found it difficult to sit among people because they would laugh at me,” Alex shared. “I used to run away from them and sit alone in my room.”

A Last Ray of Hope

Two years ago, Alex’s life took a turn when he heard that Mercy Ships, a global health charity, would be docking one of their hospital ships in Freetown. Known for providing free surgeries in underserved regions, Mercy Ships offered Alex his last hope. Upon evaluation, the charity agreed to help him.

In October 2023, Alex underwent the first of two surgeries aboard the Global Mercy, one of the charity’s hospital ships. During this procedure, surgeons removed the tumor, a critical step in saving his life. Six months later, in April 2024, Alex returned for a second surgery to reconstruct his jaw using a bone graft from his head.

A New Beginning

The surgeries were life-changing. With the tumor gone and his jaw reconstructed, Alex regained not only his ability to eat and speak but also his confidence and place in society. For the first time in years, he felt comfortable being around people.

“After the surgery, I was very happy, especially when people were around me and when they were hugging me,” Alex said. “People were afraid to be close to me, but now, everybody wants to be my friend.”

The transformation was equally profound for Alex’s mother, Zainab, who witnessed the emotional and social rebirth of her son. “I shed tears of joy when I first saw him after his surgery,” she said. “He had been so isolated and shunned from society. The place was crowded with people who were surprised and happy for him. It was incredible to watch Alex come alive and be part of his community again.”

The Expertise Behind the Transformation

Dr. Manjit Dhillon, a consultant surgeon in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in Scotland, played a key role in Alex’s treatment. Reflecting on the unique challenges of Alex’s case, Dr. Dhillon noted that such tumors are rarely seen at advanced stages in countries with accessible healthcare systems.

“In the UK, we see benign jaw tumors like Alex’s, but they are most likely picked up very early during a routine dental scan,” Dr. Dhillon explained. “The patient would have the tumor removed at an early stage and so it would never grow to the size we see in Alex’s case.”

Dr. Dhillon expressed gratitude for being part of Alex’s journey. “It was amazing to be part of his journey and to see him embracing a future of hope.”
