Meat Poultry Nutrition

“Does it taste like chicken?” So many people ask this when presented with a new “exotic” meat to taste. It seems chicken is the most common taste benchmark to most people. This is not surprising, since chicken is one of the more common meat sources in most cultures and countries. They are also, therefore, one of the more common animal-based protein sources. Poultry, in general, is a good source of complete protein, meaning they contain all 9 essential amino acids. Chicken, with its 27g of protein per 100g meat, is not the only poultry available in the market. Other poultry include Ostrich meat, which has 28g protein for 100g of meat. Turkey and geese, each has 29g of protein for 100g of meat. Duck has only 19g protein per 100g meat. However, the champ of poultry protein is the Emu. This bird packs 31g of protein for every 100g of meat. Poultry meat is one of the most versatile to cook. It is also one of the “cleaner” sources of protein in that their cholesterol levels, in general, are amongst the lowest amongst the meat choices.
